On the instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, Director General Punjab PDMA Umar Abbas Mela visited Gujrat district, where he made a detailed review of various sensitive locations, flood protection projects and district arrangements in view of the monsoon rains and possible flood situation. During the visit, the DG PDMA inspected various disposal stations, sensitive areas adjacent to River Chenab, flood protection projects, embankments and protective bunds at Majra Pali, Daulat Nagar and the banks of River Chenab. He also reviewed the culverts constructed by the district government, safety measures and ongoing development and safety works. The DG PDMA was given a detailed briefing regarding urban flooding, rainwater drainage, desalination, flood response plan, emergency arrangements, preparation of relief camps, available facilities and rescue operations. He directed that the provision of food, clean drinking water, medicines and other basic facilities should be ensured in flood relief camps at all times, while citizens should be informed about possible dangers in a timely manner through door-to-door awareness campaigns in sensitive areas. He further directed that special arrangements should be made for the safe evacuation of women, children, elderly and other vulnerable groups and that flood relief camps, rescue machinery, boats, staff and evacuation plans should be kept active at all times according to the needs of sensitive villages.
